No event in the 20th century had greater impact on the world than World War II. There were few sovereign nations that weren’t involved in or affected by the war in some way, and millions of people lost their lives. Have an in-depth look at the events of this global conflict that are closer to home – the fall of Singapore – in a special two-part series, 1942 – FALL OF SINGAPORE.
With a population close to 5 million people, Singapore today is a cosmopolitan city that plays a key role in international trade and finance. But seventy years ago, its citizens suffered one of the most bitter and brutal campaigns of World War II. The fall of Singapore on February 15, 1942 was a crushing defeat that unleashed national Asian independence movements, and forever changed Asian, Australian and British aspirations. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the fall of Singapore, a historic event that brought the British empire to its knees and dramatically changed the destiny of millions of people.
Watch rarely seen archival footage and re-enactments that will reveal new and shocking insights into the events that led to the fall of the island fortress once known as the ‘Gibraltar of the East.’ 1942 – FALL OF SINGAPORE traces the early days of the Pacific War and tells the story of the creation of the new nations of Singapore and Malaysia that rose from the ashes of the turmoil. Shot in key locations, the programme includes first-hand accounts from surviving soldiers, airmen and nurses from the frontline, as well as civilian eyewitnesses. It also provides a multi-national perspective from that of the Australian infantry gunners to the Japanese foot soldiers.
