JOURNEY WITH HENRY GOLDING

EPISODE 1 | DEPARTURE

Join Henry Golding as he embarks on a journey of self-discovery, called a "Bejalai" before he enters his marriage later in the year.

It starts in his homeland of Betong, by teaming up with his uncle, Apa Tuai, who shows him the ways of the Iban, as they spend 3 days living in the jungle preparing Henry for his journey ahead.

EPISODE 2 | HIGHLANDS

Having survived his first ever experience living in the jungles of Borneo, Henry's journey of self-discovery continues as he heads to Bario, the highland home of the Kelabit tribe.

Henry meets Johnson, a tough but endearing Kelabit, who agrees to help him seek out the elusive and nomadic Penan tribe.

EPISODE 3 | NOMADS

With his Kelabit guide, the tough but endearing Johnson, they meet up with two members of the elusive Penan tribe.

Sedadu and Julia introduce Henry to the little-known life and ways of the nomadic Penan – hunters and gatherers who survive completely off the rainforests of Borneo.

EPISODE 4 | GERAWAT

Making his way back to the town of Bario, the Kelabit community decides that Henry is deserving of one of their highest honor, a Kelabit name.

The unique Kelabit naming ceremony is rarely performed and only a few people, including Henry has earned the honor to becoming a tribe member.

EPISODE 5 | SETTLING

Henry leaves Bario and ventures further into the Borneo Jungle. He meets Bapak, a former nomadic Penan elder, who has been persuaded to live a settled life with his family.

He also learns of the difficulties that older Penan face since leaving their jungle home and is shocked at how fast the younger generation have adapted to replacing blowpipes with mobile phones.

EPISODE 6 | CLOSURE

In this final episode of Surviving Borneo, Henry concludes his 'bejalai' by undergoing the traditional Iban rite of passage of getting a 'bejalai' tattoo.

For several painful hours, he subjects himself to the ancient art of hand-tapped tattooing. Drifting in and out of consciousness, his mind reflects upon his journey to some of the most remote parts of Borneo.
